Two rooms which Gudja primary school has been ordered to vacate will be used as offices for the Consultative Council for the South, according to council chairman Silvio Parnis.

He said when contacted that the rooms were not meant for his personal use as an MP, but for the council's use. He said he was offered the rooms by the Ministry of Education, but he did not want them if  their use hindered the pupils.

Earlier this morning, the Malta Union of Teachers said the rooms were to be used as an office for a Member of Parliament but did not name anyone.

The MUT said on its website that it wrote to the Education Minister about the matter, which it was informed about by a group of teachers and LSAs from the school.

This group said they were told to make room for the MP by the headteacher.

They noted that since the school is currently being utilised to its maximum capacity, this move would create logistical and safety problems during the scholastic year.

The MUT said it was against the move and directed members not to move anything within the school and stay in their classes until the matter was clarified and an agreement reached.

MUT President Kevin Bonello said he received an e-mail from the Education Minister this morning, saying he would be looking into the matter.

He said that all the MUT was saying was that such a move should be done in summer and not during the scholastic year.
