I’m never sure if we did end up voting for Alfred Sant’s Swiss offer after all. When Malta was gripped by referendum fever—to join or not to join that was the question—Alfred Sant was leader of the MLP, Joseph Muscat was a cub and all were rabidly anti-EU. OK let’s erase that in case they send vultures to eat my entrails—they were anti joining the EU.

Referendum over we moved on and Swiss stuff was all stuffed away in history foil. Labour became very pro-EU, we voted in a new style Joseph Muscat and all is  right and bright. Now the EU is going to be our passport to mint money, build houses, and save our pensions and health service. The EU is even more magical than any old Swiss stuffiness.

But some of the old Swiss connection still reigns. Well, at least the feeling that we are all in cuckoo land still grips me.

The MEP elections are fast approaching and the former PM and leader of the MLP and rabid anti-EU man, Alfred Sant, is one of the PL’s star candidates. All well and good I say—especially because I do believe in conversions. Pity Labour leaders don’t still ride horses as good old Dom used to do when his buckle economy ruled. Because, as the bible teaches us, a horse features heavily in one heavenly conversion.

Sant is now vying for a seat in the EU parliament. The cuckooish feeling does not only stem from the fact that he might be one of our MEPs. I don’t wish to offend the man further but was there ever a more failed politician than him? Think VAT. Sorry scratch that. Think CET. Think of his election and referendum losses.  Who won that referendum by the way? Did Alfred Sant ever answer that?

It worries me to think of the recent shaming episode, when the vast majority of MEPs voted against Malta’s citizenship scheme but all four Maltese Labour MEPs voted in favour, together with the UKIP representatives. UKIP are very strongly against the EU. They contest for seats in its parliament to get the UK out of it. Maybe good bed-fellows for our Sant?

One final note about what is flying over our cuckoo’s nest. The leader of the Labour MEPs, Joe Cuschieri, said quite brazenly that no party should endorse a eurosceptic candidate. Hmmm. Great cryptic barb that was. Was it directed at his own party which, to my knowledge, lovingly endorsed Alfred Sant?

Life, as one March hare once didn’t say, marches on and we the onlookers get more and more confused.
