Scintillating individual performances from Kristina Vogel and Francois Pervis helped Germany and France to finish top of the medal standings as the Track Cycling World Championships in Cali, Colombia concluded on Sunday.

Germany and France finished with four gold medals apiece, largely thanks to sprint stars Pervis and Vogel.

Pervis celebrated by kissing the track after winning his third title, a 2-0 sprint win over defending champion Stefan Botticher, of Germany, which followed on from his Keirin and one-kilometre time-trial successes.

Pervis said: “Three world titles. It’s the first time for me.

“The first time I’ve won the sprint and Keirin and I did an amazing time in the kilo, under one minute. Everybody pushed me and it (Cali) is my second home.”

Sunday’s win was Pervis’s favourite, as it came in the track’s blue riband event.

“The sprint is the most important event and the most beautiful event,” he said.

“The Keirin, of course, the kilo, of course, but everybody says if you win the sprint you’re the best. And I beat the world champion of last year.

“It’s beautiful for me.”

Denis Dmitriev, of Russia, took bronze ahead of Australia’s Matthew Glaetzer.

Vogel followed her sprint win on Saturday with victory in the Keirin ahead of Australia’s Anna Meares and defending champion Becky James, of Great Britain.

“I really don’t know what happened at these World Champion-ships here,” said Vogel, who won team sprint gold on day one alongside Miriam Welte.

“After my performance I knew I was the best sprinter here, just take it easy, enjoy the ride and I don’t have to win... I got again a gold medal. It’s unbelievable.”

Sarah Hammer, of the United States, successfully defended her women’s omnium title ahead of Olympic champion Laura Trott, of Great Britain. Australia’s Annette Edmondson took bronze.

David Muntaner and Albert Torres won gold in the Madison, but only after a long deliberation by officials which saw Belgium’s Jasper De Buyst and Kenny De Ketele relegated.

The Czech Republic riders were second in Madison and Switzerland third.
