Two Australian women have been charged in a Queensland court with the serious assault of a partially blind man, Paul Buttigieg, 77, who lives in New South Wales.

The alleged attack took place on a Gold Coast bus, Australian media reported.

Lana Janet Watmough, 21, and Layni Gloria Cameron, 17, both from New South Wales, were charged with assault and public nuisance.

They gave themselves up to the police after footage of the incident, in which two women are seen bashing and racially vilifying Mr Buttigieg, was posted online, leading to media reports.

The footage was filmed by a 13-year-old girl who happened to be on the bus.

In his statement, Mr Buttigieg told the police he should not see his attackers because he was partially blind. However, he wanted to press charges.

The case continues on April 23.
