Former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta accepted to come to Malta to participate in the Economist conference being held on Thursday and Friday, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning.

Addressing a political activity at the Orrpheum in Gzira, Dr Muscat described the meeting as "very positive", remarking that security in the Mediterranean region was crucial for stability in Europe.

Turning his attention to the European Parliament elections next May, he said that the European Socialists gave the green light for Martin Schulz to run for President of the European Commission.

Dr Muscat said this news boded well for Malta and so urged the people to vote for the Labour candidates as well as for Mr Schulz.

He played down Labour’s chances in this elections arguing that the parties in government never fared well in them, as they gave the opportunity for disgruntled people to protest with their vote.

“Abstaining would only play in the hands of the PN,” warned Dr Muscat. He said that Labour’s target in these election to obtain the majority of votes.

Regarding the case of the 665 ‘lost’ Enemalta files, he referred to former minister Tonio Fenech as not being "a new kid on the clock" (sic) and criticised him for giving different versions after initially saying that he had not been aware of them.

Dr Muscat said that the government would be imposing a fine, demand the consumers to pay their pending bills, and collaborate to reveal all those involved in this scandal. He said that this had already led to widen the probe.

Regarding the accusation of political interference, he said that the Opposition has filed a complaint of breach of privilege against Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, in spite of campaigning agains the complaint filed last October.
