I write this in support of the appointment of John Mamo to head Malta’s contribution to the Expo Milano 2015, which has already attracted over 100 countries.

US President Barack Obama is expected to make an important declaration on the US participation during his visit to Italy later this month, keeping in mind that China is spending huge amounts for its fantastic stand.

Mamo is a man with a vision and has many contacts in Italy. Malta’s presence may be small, but small is beautiful. The theme of the expo is food and nutrition.

May I suggest we show Malta’s cuisine specialities, which are appreciated by tourists. We could present the ħobża Maltija, pastizzi and qassatat (Maltese bread, cheesecakes, small pies).

They would be appreciated and we should have a small team of cooks working on the spot. These and the artistic talents present in Malta would offer Mamo many original ideas. The trouble is that they have to march against time, as just over one year is left.

Someone who is eyeing the expo and wants to invest in Europe is George Soros, who has not invested in Italy. He has now been quoted in the German magazine Die Spiegel as saying: “I believe in the euro, my team is looking at how to make money in Europe”.

Italy has already made contact but it all depends on whether the new government of Matteo Renzi will preside over stability. This what Soros’ team in Italy is looking for.

My hope is that Malta will open its doors to the millionaire Soros, whose roots are in the Mediterranean.
