The meeting between Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and the new Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Rome has been postponed to tomorrow at the Italian government’s request.

The meeting was meant to be held this evening but the Italian government postponed the meeting due to internal political issues in Italy. Tomorrow’s meeting has not yet been confirmed, sources said.

Dr Muscat’s planned visit to Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Italian government, would have been the first by a foreign leader following Mr Renzi's swearing in as Italy's Prime Minister on Saturday.

Dr Muscat had a close relationship with Renzi's predecessor Enrico Letta, with the two having worked jointly in areas such as irregular migration.
