An amateur pilot managed to land his light plane safely after a bird smashed through his wind shield while flying over Florida on Saturday.

Robert Weber was flying about 16km from the nearest airport when the bird  crashed through his side window, sending shards of glass and feathers flying into the cockpit.

Weber suffered a cut to his forehead.

"The windscreen just exploded," he said.
"First thing that came to mind was the first thing I was told when I started flying, and that was 'just fly the f---ing plane'.
