Ibrahim Hussen and Elga Caccia-lanza are the winners of the 2014 Malta Half Marathon.

Sudan-born Hussen, who runs for St Patrick’s AC, was in a class of his own as he finished a clear winner when completing the 21km course in one hour 10 minutes and 24 seconds.

Australia’s Yosef Scerri was second in 1:11.47 while Gary Perrington, of England, was third in 1:11.51.

“I am really pleased with my performance today,” Hussen, winner of the MAAA Road Running League this season, told Times of Malta.

“Despite suffering from a minor stomach problem in the first part of the race, I still managed to remain clear of my rivals and clinch victory in my first participation in this race.

“Unfortunately, my physical condition was not 100 per cent so I could not push myself to the limit. But I’m looking to defend my title next year and, hopefully, I can clock a faster time.”

Veteran Charles Cilia was the first Maltese runner home when crossing the finish line in 1:12.32.

The 48-year-old was visibly delighted with his performance, saying it was a good test ahead of his participation in the Treviso and Rome marathons in the coming weeks.

“Being the first Maltese runner home gives me great satisfaction,” said Cilia, a five-times winner of the Malta Half Marathon.

“In the last few weeks I have been training hard and this race came at the right moment before I compete in two marathons abroad.

“Today, I felt really good and this result fills me with confidence ahead of the races in Treviso and Rome.”

The women’s title went to Italy’s Caccialanza. She entered the gantry at 1:20.13, followed by compatriots Paola Bernardo (1:22.18) and Lisa Ferrari (1:24.31.).

“This is my first race in Malta and I enjoyed it,” Caccialanza said.

“The atmosphere was really good here as there were a lot of people cheering us on and their warmth has been of great support.

“The course is challenging but at the same time very enjoyable. I’m already thinking about next year’s race as I intend to return.”

Rita Galea was the first local female runner home in 1:27.21.

“I never imagined to achieve this result on my first participation in the half marathon,” the 43-year-old Mellieħa runner said.

“I have been preparing for this race with coach Has Kesra since last October. Indeed, his training methods paid off and how.”
