Immanuel Mifsud’s poetry collection A Handful of Leaves has been published in Slovenia by the IRIU Institute, one of Slovenia’s most innovative and culturally committed entities.

Mifsud’s book forms part of a series of publications by IRIU, featuring the works of European award-winning writers and poets. Speaking at the press launch of the book in Ljubljana, IRIU’s director Glorjana Veber underlined that this is the first time that a book by a Maltese author has been translated into Slovene and published in Slovenia.

Mifsud’s poems were translated by one of Slovenia’s most prominent poets Peter Semolic and renowned Slovene writer and translator Vera Pejovic.

Semolic had already translated some works by Immanuel Mifsud when the latter was invited to Slovenia for the Terceti Festival, held annually in Ljubljana, and these were published in Slovenian journals such as Nova Revija and Poetikon.

Pejovic had also translated some of Mifsud’s work and also interviewed him during a special presentation of the author organised by the Maltese community in Luxembourg.

The translation of Mifsud’s book was funded through the Spreading Words Scheme by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts and Malta Arts Fund.
