The Malta Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the 'decisive action' taken by the government to uncover theft of electricity. It said that news that Enemalta had been losing some €30m a year in loss of revenue from theft of electricity was perturbing. It said it was certain that this contributed to Malta having industrial electricity rates which are the third highest across all EU Member States.
"Whilst the announced action against abuse is commendable, the Malta Chamber expects Enemalta and Government to implement, with urgency, proper governance and internal control procedures and processes. These are deemed necessary to curb abuse and enhance efficiency that will lead to a fairer distribution of the cost of electricity generation and distribution in Malta across all users," the chamber said.
