André Schembri’s excellent season continued yesterday as the Malta striker scored a brilliant goal to help Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia to a 2-1 home win over lowly AE Kouklion.

The Malta striker fired Omonia ahead after 25 minutes, pouncing on a short clearance on the edge of the area before hitting a perfect volley that soared into the net.

Alex Rubio doubled Omonia’s lead on 71 minutes before Wesslem pulled a goal back for Kouklion nine minutes from time.

The result left Omonia fifth in the league on 41 points, nine adrift of leaders AEL Limassol who travel to Anorthosis this afternoon.

In Australia, Malta captain Michael Mifsud scored a hat-trick to inspire Melbourne Heart to a thumping 8-1 victory over the Australian Institute of Sport in the National Youth League at Epping Stadium yesterday.

Mifsud featured for Melbourne Heart’s youth side as he continues his recovery from injury.

The striker was withdrawn at half-time after completing his hat-trick.
