School-Aged Drug Abusers and Narratives of Desistance is the title of a paper that Damien Spiteri will present at the 17th Work in Progress in the Social Studies seminar series convened by Paul Clough (anthropology), Peter Mayo (education) and Michael Briguglio (sociology).

Desistance implies both a desire not to perpetuate crime and the stopping of the committing of crimes. Various theories have been developed to explain desistance sociologically. Added to this, different therapeutic models have been applied in the rehabilitation of offenders.

The seminar will also incorporate a ‘conversation’ with Leon David Madden, a facilitator with several years experience at the Caritas New Hope programme.

Dr Spiteri lectures at Mcast in the area of health and social care. He also works part-time as a social worker at Caritas.

The seminar will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 7 pm in MDT 122, at the end of the glass corridor behind HSBC branch at the Msida campus.

Students and the public are invited to attend.
