The interesting article ‘Digging into Malta’s prehistoric past’ (February 1) may give readers the impression that the €2.5 million grant for a five-year research project called Fragsus (Fragility and Sustainability in Restricted Island Environments) was awarded by the European Research Council to a single institution.

In actual fact, one of the strengths of this project (incidentally the first ever ERC-funded project to be focused entirely on Malta) is that it brings together expertise and efforts from across five institutions in an international collaboration.

Queen’s University is the Host Institution leading the project, together with the University of Cambridge, the University of Malta, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (Malta) and Heritage Malta.

The University of Malta’s participation in the project includes scholars and researchers from the Department of Classics and Archaeology in the Faculty of Arts, the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science, and the Department of the Built Heritage in the Faculty for the Built Environment.
