The Housing Authority is selling 43 apartments, three maisonettes, and four garages, Social Solidarity Minister Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said this morning.

The properties are available for those with less than €40,000 worth of assets and are targeted at first-time buyers.

Ms Coleiro-Preca said many of the properties had been allocated previously but agreements fell through after problems with bank loans.

She announced that the subsidy for purchase would also be raised from 25 per cent to 35 per cent.

The minister also launched a scheme, called Sir Sid Darek (Become the owner of your home), through which those renting social houses can buy the properties.

Ms Coleiro-Preca said the subsidy on purchases would amount to 50 per cent of the properties’ market value.

The value will be based on the locality and area, roof space, and the value of the land, she said. The scheme will be available to those with up to €150,000 worth of assets.
