Liverpool cross swords with leaders Arsenal in an early kick-off at Anfield this afternoon.

After the poor performance at West Brom, during which a schoolboy error let the home side to the sharing of spoils in a 1-1 draw, Liverpool are now feeling the pressure for not strengthening the side in the January transfer window.

The club’s US owners have kept their cash tight and thwarted manager Brendan Rodgers from consolidating the side to sustain a real challenge for Champions League places.

Rodgers, who is having a good season on the Reds’ bench, does not seem to be a tough negotiator when it comes to dealing with the owners.

Some critics have dubbed him a ‘yes man’. Had he really wanted to make additions in January, he should have started business in the first week of the year not the last.

But Rodgers told reporters this week the club is calm despite missing out on two possible transfers.

Tomorrow week, Arsenal and Liverpool will clash again at the Emirates Stadium in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Kolo Toure has vowed to learn from his ‘bad decision’ which gifted West Brom the equaliser at The Hawthorns.

At Arsenal, Arsene Wenger said there is nothing ‘lucky’ about his team’s title challenge this season as the Gunners returned to the top of the standings last week.

Wenger, who will have to wait for new signing Kim Kallstrom to shrug off a back injury before giving him his debut, insisted this week that his side can win their first Premier League title for a decade after watching them secure a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace while Manchester City were toppled from their perch following a 0-1 upset to Chelsea at home.

Manchester City, still smarting from the defeat to Chelsea on Monday, travel to East Anglia today to take on Norwich at Carrow Road.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes it will be “impossible” for clubs to compete with Manchester City if Financial Fair Play is not enforced. The London club were the biggest spenders during the January transfer window but their outlay of £45m was more than covered by the sales of Juan Mata and Kevin de Bruyne for a combined £55m.

Chelsea play the misfiring Newcastle at home today looking to sustain their challenge even though Mourinho remarked his team were not the favourites to land the title this season.

Everton, two points adrift of their rivals Liverpool in the standings, visit London tomorrow to play Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Leighton Baines told reporters this week that Roberto Martinez had a big influence on his decision to stay with Everton as Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood refuses to lose confidence in Roberto Soldado, who continues to struggle in front of goal.

Last week, the Manchester United fans travelled to Stoke with high hopes that manager David Moyes had steadied the ship but to no avail as the champions will seek to make up for that 2-1 defeat tomorrow by beating lowly Fulham at Old Trafford.

United must win every one of their last 14 league games if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the Champions League, according to Chris Smalling.
