Two former committee members of Hamrun Spartans football club have been banned from football for life for match fixing.

Elton Borg and Julian Friggieri in July last year had been charged, along with two players, of fixing a number of matches involving Hamrun Spartans.

Borg and Friggieri had admitted the charges and had resigned from all football activities. The resignations had been accepted by the MFA Anti-Corruption Board which did not impose further punishment, deeming the resignations to be sufficient.

The board confirmed its decision when it was asked to reconsider by the MFA council, arguing that it had no jurisdiction over the former officials once they had resigned from all positions.

The executive committee of the MFA looked into the matter and decided that the final decision lay with the MFA Council.

The Council today unanimously agreed to ban Borg and Friggieri for life after deeming that they were subject to the MFA's regulations when the breach took place.

Last year Hamrun Spartans, who now play in Division One, were given a seven-point penalty and fined €10,000 after pleading guilty.

Disciplinary proceedings against players Roderick Fenech and Massimo Grima are still ongoing.

The Anti-Corruption Board had found that the actions of the former officials had actually penalised the club – the match fixing having been for betting purposes.
