Celebrated scientist Vlatko Vedral will shortly be in Malta to give a talk entitled ‘Decoding Reality’, on how information binds everything in the universe.

The talk, organised by the University and Malta Cafe Scientifique in association with Go, will be held on February 13 at 7.30pm on the second floor of the University campus in St Paul’s Street, Valletta. Doors open 7.15pm.

Prof. Vedral will explore the hypothesis that the fundamental entity in the universe is not energy or matter, but information. He will discuss how mankind could decode this information, and in the process, challenge its concepts of particles, time, determinism, and of reality itself. He will also discuss his work on quantum physics and how it applies to biology and technology.

Prof. Vedral, who has written a book on this subject entitled Decoding Reality, is a physicist and professor of Physics at the University of Oxford, UK, and at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore. He is also a Fellow of Wolfson College, UK, which is known for its research on Quantum Information Theory and the Theory of Entanglement.

Quantum entanglement – a process that can change an object without even touching it, which Albert Einstein once dismissed as “spooky action at a distance”, is now considered a fact. It forms part of the world of quantum mechanics, which deals with the study of very small things. Scientists have recently discovered that such quantum effects, which can be used to create completely secure messages and superfast computers, may reach much further than previously thought.

Attendance to the talk is free and refreshments will be provided.

Those interested to attend are asked to register by e-mailing Dr André Xuereb on andre.xuereb@um.edu.mt.
