Eight students from Malta recently attended a training activity on sustainable development in Stockholm, Sweden, as part of the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) programme.

The activity included informative sessions on writing articles, filming videos and photojournalism, complemented by practical reporting on themes related to sustainable development.

The students worked on various themes such as waste produced by fast food outlets, packaging waste and the value of tap water compared to bottled water.

As part of their investigative work the students conducted interviews with people on the streets and spoke to outlet managers and other people concerned. The groups’ work was exhibited on the last day of the activity.

Ecological magazine editors, speakers from motivational companies and representatives from a regional waste company also addressed the students to instil in them the passion and inspiration to develop their potential as future environmentalists and journalists.

The Maltese students came from St Margaret College’ Girls’ Secondary School, Żejtun, St Nicholas College’ Girls’ Secondary School, Rabat, the Archbishop’s Seminary School, Rabat, Our Lady Immaculate School, Hamrun, Gozo College and Żejtun Eco Centre. They were accompanied by YRE national coordinator Audrey Gauci and two local EkoSkola teachers.

The other participants came from Germany, France, Canada, Romania, Latvia, Slovakia, Montenegro, Kazakhstan and Macedonia.
