Italian Ambassador Giovanni Umberto De Vito recently visited the site where MDM Costruzioni Generali Srl, an Italian company from Salerno, is building an underground network of tunnels aimed at channelling rainwater more efficiently to the sea to reduce flooding in Malta. The company is working in a joint venture with local company Bonnici Group.

The visit took place within the framework of Italy’s commitment to support Italian businesses active abroad.

The first phase of the project involves the construction of an 11-kilometre tunnel starting in Attard and Naxxar and ending in Ta’ Xbiex, which will cost over €23 million. The second phase will involve the construction of a two-kilometre tunnel from Żabbar to Marsascala, costing €6 million.

The Italian company’s know-how and technical expertise enabled it to win the tenders for the design and construction of the two tunnels, which were commissioned by the Transport and Infrastructure Ministry as part of the National Flood Relief Project, launched by the Maltese government in 2011.

The project, which will cost almost €53 million, is co-financed by the EU.

Works will be nearing completion by the end of this year.
