Controversy over the citizenship scheme could have easily been avoided if the government had heeded advice and got it right from the beginning, Nationalist leader Simon Busuttil said yesterday.
In a meeting with European Commission vice president Maroš Šefčovič yesterday, Dr Busuttil said the party welcomed the fact that the government has given in to EU pressure and decided to include a residency requirement as part the programme.
Dr Busuttil said the party is eagerly awaiting the legal notice to ensure that it reflects what has been agreed.
Flanked by the two PN MEPs, David Casa and Roberta Metsola, Dr Busuttil also explained that the PN is now focusing on May’s European election, where it is targeting to elect a third MEP for the first time.
Dr Busuttil told Mr Šefčovič that the PN truly believes in EU values and is determined to continue to represent Malta’s best interests. He said that an extra MEP would give more clout to put forward Malta’s interests in the European Parliament.
