A B&B in a Dorset village has been named the best in the world in the Trip Advisor awards.

Bindon Bottom, an £85-per-night (€104) five-room guest house by Lulworth Cove, scooped top spot in the B&B category of the 2014 Travellers’ Choice Awards.

The Victorian property, run by Lisa and Clive Orchard, beat establishments in Morocco, Thailand and the US.

It was one of six British B&Bs rated as the top 10 in the world by the annual awards, now in their 12th year, which are based on reviews and opinions of millions of customers.

Second place was secured by The All Seasons Guest House in the seaside resort of Filey in North Yorkshire.

Only Italy scored a higher overall number of unique hotel award-winners than in the UK

Across all categories – Top Hotels, Bargain, B&Bs and Inns, Family, Luxury, Romance and Small Hotels – 26 UK properties were awarded places in the world’s best lists.

This is up from 14 in 2013, with only Italy scoring a higher overall number of unique hotel award-winners than in the UK.

Speaking after the announcement, Mr and Mrs Orchard said they were delighted with their accolade.

“Providing our guests with the best possible experience of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast is of the upmost importance to us, and so it’s genuinely heart-warming to be recognised by our guests for the work we do to make their stay special,” the couple said.

The Chester Residence in Edinburgh and Lauriston Court Hotel in Llandudno also featured within the top three properties in the world in the categories of Luxury and Bargain respectively.

While London scooped the most awards of any UK town or city, smaller seaside towns generally outshone larger cities – with Torquay in Devon, St Ives in Cornwall and Blackpool landing more awards than anywhere else outside the capital.

Hotels in Devon secured 11 awards across five of the seven categories in the awards, more than establishments in New York and Rome combined.

Carolyn Custerson, chief executive of Visit Devon, said: “Obviously we are thrilled – but not entirely surprised – to find that Devon hotels have outperformed New York and Rome on Trip Advisor.

“Devon hotels offer outstanding quality service – and value for money. Travel-wise, they are also much more accessible and environmentally friendly to visit than going abroad.”

In Pontresina in Switzerland, the city’s Grand Hotel Kronenhof won the coveted title of the world’s top hotel for 2014.
