The Vatican’s Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints last Tuesday voted in favour of the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Mother Margerita De Brincat, the Gozitan foundress of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This means Pope Francis will now sign a decree proclaiming her venerable.

The meeting of cardinals and bishops in Rome was led by Cardinal James Harvey. Also present was Fr Gianni Califano, postulator of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans).

The next step for Mother De Brincat to be beatified and declared blessed is for a miracle occuring through her intercession.

Last Monday, a prayer vigil was held at the church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Palm Street, Victoria, where Mother De Brincat lived for many years and is now buried.

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech said this was a “historic day for the Church in Gozo, because for the first time in history, a daughter of the diocese of Gozo lies so close to the glory of the altars”.

Mother De Brincat passed away on January 22, 1952.
