A short but intensive introductory course in marine biology spanning just three after-noons is planned to be held during the summer by the AquaBioTech Group.
The course will be run several times during June, July and August, to allow several intakes of participants. It is tailored-made for participants with limited time on their hands and for tourists visiting the Maltese islands.
The course includes eight hours of lectures and sessions of snorkelling or scuba diving, depending on participants’ preferences. It is an ideal both as a foundation course for people aiming to delve deeper into marine biology later on or for those who simply wish to get acquainted with the Mediterranean’s marine biodiversity.
Prior knowledge of marine biology or scuba diving is not necessary, since introductory Padi-certified scuba diving courses will be offered to participants. Participants will receive course notes and a certificate of attendance.
Participants in the Discover Scuba Diving course will receive a Padi certificate which is accredited towards further Padi courses and continued scuba education.
Lectures will take place at the AquaBioTech Group premises, Mosta, after 2pm, and will be delivered by marine biologist Alan Deidun.
Topics to be covered include an overview of the major marine habitats and species in the Mediterranean, an introduction to planktonic communities and important physical processes shaping our seas and an overview of major threats facing the conservation of living marine resources.
The scuba sessions will be led by Watercolours Diving Centre in Sliema, while snorkelling sessions will take place at Golden Bay.
An innovative feature of the courses is that participants can opt for an underwater session during which wireless communication and full-face masks are used, enabling direct interaction with the lecturer underwater.
