Students and staff from St Patrick’s Salesian School, Sliema, recently spent a weekend venturing from Mosta to Għadira Bay as a trial expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award.

The experience involved first aid training, back-packing, tent-pitching, orienteering, map reading, meeting deadlines, team-building and survival skills. In the process, the team appreciated the beauty of nature that everyone takes for granted, the joy of being in good company and working hard to achieve a goal.

The award is open to youths aged over 14 and consists of four sections: service, physical recreation, skills and adventurous journey. Participants need to offer volunteer work in their community improve their fitness level, learn or develop a particular talent, and are led to gain a deeper understanding of the environment and the great outdoors.
