The government has provided details of a scheme announced in the Budget to refund VAT paid on vehicle registration tax between May 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008.

The refund applies to new and imported second-hand cars and motorcycles for private use. Only those in whose name the vehicles were registered will be eligible.

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna told a press conference that between €25m and €30 million will be paid back. The refunds will be issued gradually in equal instalments over seven years, as announced in the Budget.

Some 40,000 people will receive a total of between €500 and €1,000 with the average being €771 over the seven-year period.

DEALERS AND IMPORTERS

The refunds are not applicable to licensed vehicle dealers or importers unless they can prove they had registered the vehicles for their personal use.

All eligible owners will receive a letter from Transport Malta next month and cheques will be sent in the post. More information will be available on telephone 80072373.
