The start of the new year is the perfect time to look ahead at what new technology is approaching on the horizon. What apps will we download on our tablets, what laptops will help us work and play, and what mobiles will we be calling from?

The mobile phone industry may be one of the faster to introduce new products – in fact, we already have a fair idea of what new phones will be launched in 2014. We don’t know what they will look like but we’re pretty sure we’re in for some surprises.

Apart from the ones showcased here, honourable mentions should go to other upcoming mobile phones, including the Sony Xperia Z2, Nokia Lumia 1820, Samsung Galaxy Round and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, all of which should be solid releases during the coming year.

Which phone are you most looking forward to?

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is set to build on the success of the S4 in a big way. It’s a flagship phone that should continue the premium feel of the S4 while adding to the usability and technology factors.

The new handset will probably include a 64-bit 2.3GHz quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM, a five-inch screen with up to 2560x1440 at 560ppi and a metal body. Expect it to pack all the toys of the S4 and more.

iPhone 6

With the muted success of the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6 has a lot of work to do to regain top spot and win back fans. While we don’t know much about what’s coming in the new phone, we do know it is likely to continue with the 64-bit architecture, include more RAM, a better camera and maybe a bigger screen.

In true Apple style, nothing is officially confirmed until they are good and ready to go.

Sony Xperia Z1S

The Sony Xperia Z1 is an exceptional mobile phone. It is sleek, well made and works very well. It’s also a hard act to follow. The Sony Xperia Z1S is rumoured to be a slightly smaller handset featuring a 4.3-inch screen running at 720p, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage.

Rumours also have it that the Sony Xperia Z1S will include a 20MP Exmore RS camera sensor and a 2MP front camera too.

HTC One 2 (M8)

Currently codenamed the HTC M8, the new HTC One 2 is a phone we are really looking forward to. The HTC One is an exceptional phone that looks great, feels great and still performs at the top of its class. Despite internal troubles at HTC, we took the One to our hearts.

The HTC One 2 is said to offer the same build quality with the machined aluminium body, a five-inch screen running at 1080p, 2.2 GHz 800 Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 3GB of RAM, an Ultra Pixel camera capable of 3D images and Android 4.4 KitKat.
