Malta on a local, European and global level will be the main theme of the Labour Party’s upcoming annual general conference, Labour Party deputy leader for party affairs Toni Abela said.

Dr Abela said this theme would also be the focus of a motion to be presented to the party’s delegates in the week-long general conference.

The party’s general conference will take place between February 3 and 9 and will include a number of events such as a question-and-answer session between the delegates and Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

When asked for a reaction to a Times of Malta report that the European Commission was looking into the possibility of opening infringement procedures against Malta after the government decided to go ahead with its cash-for-citizenship scheme, Dr Abela said he “didn’t see anything out of this world with this declaration”.

The government would see what the Commission had to say and then would take it from there.

“I don’t really see it as a problem – it’s part of the structure when a country doesn’t agree with the Commission,” he said.
