The untimely death of Joe Chetcuti not only shocked the local waterpolo fraternity but in particular the Neptunes ‘old timers’.

“A toddler by the name of Joe Chetcuti, who eventually proved to be a fast swimmer and a sharp-shooter, established himself in the side”. That was in 1964 when Neptunes returned to win the championship after a barren spell.

Chetcuti went on to play for Neptunes until the 1976 season and even captained the side between 1973 and 1976. He won three league championships in 1964, 1969 and 1972 (all doubles) and six KO Cups in 1964, 1967, 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1975.

Chetcuti also competed successfully in a number of swimming championships and had started coaching in 1977.

To his sons, Kurt and Karl, and also to the rest of the family go my deepest condolences.
