Full-time employment increased by 2.6 per cent in August when compared to the corresponding month in 2012, the NSO said today. Unemployment was also up.
Over a period of one year, the labour supply increased by 2.9 per cent, reaching 165,187.
This was mainly attributed to increases in the gainfully occupied population of 3,995, and in registered unemployment of 636.
Full-Time Employment
Full-time employment in the private sector went up by 2.6 per cent with increases being recorded in the Administrative and Support Services Activities and in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities.
On the other hand, private sector employment within Construction dropped by 3.1 per cent when compared to August 2012.
Within the public sector, year-on-year increases in full-time employment were mostly recorded within Public Administration and Defence.
Female full-time employment increased by 2,987 persons, reaching 56,106. During the same period, men registering as working on full-time basis rose by 1,008, totalling 101,624.
When compared to August 2012, the total number of employees increased by
2.8 per cent, whereas the number of self-employed went up by 1.1 per cent.
Part-Time Employment
Registered part-time employment went up by 4.6 per cent when compared to the previous year’s levels. The economic activities where increases in part-time employment were registered included mainly Wholesale and Retail; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Public Administration and Defence.
On the other hand part-time employment in Information and Communication went down by 128 persons. This decrease was mainly attributed to a drop in employment in activities associated with Programming and Broadcasting.
In August 2013, the number of part-timers who also held a full-time job amounted to 24,427 persons, increasing by 4.0 per cent or 944 persons when compared to the corresponding month in 2012. Compared to August 2012, the number of employed whose part-time job was their primary occupation totalled 34,355, also rising by 5.0 per cent or 1,630 persons when compared to 2012 levels.
The registered unemployed in August totalled 7,457, from 6,821 in August last year.
