Two sex videos featuring Maltese men and women, which were uploaded to social media without consent, are being investigated by the police.

The films, both showing individuals engaged in oral sex, appeared on social media as a flood of nude ‘selfies’ were shared across websites.

Police sources confirmed the cyber crimes unit was investigating the separate incidents after receiving reports that the videos had been shared without the subjects’ permission.

One of the videos, featuring a French photographer and a young Maltese model, sparked a wave of homophobic and hateful comments. The clip was first uploaded more than two months ago but re-emerged last week during what one social media user described as “Malta’s home-made porn gone public”.

The three-minute clip was shot in a derelict building using an unmanned video camera. The voice of a third man, believed to be French, can be heard and it appears he was looking out for any passersby.

The film was uploaded to popular video-sharing website Vimeo by the photographer’s Facebook alias, StudioMalta, in November.

Contacted by Times of Malta, the photographer declined to comment on the case, saying only he had been questioned by the police.

The photographer tried to justify his actions in a series of Facebook exchanges between him and the model’s friends. The model, he said, had signed a contract that entitled him to share any images taken during the shoot.

The video inadvertently led to several acts of cyber bullying towards the model.

One comment even instructed him to “kill himself while he had the chance”.

Asked for his version of events since the launch of the investigation, the model declined to comment on what action was being taken against the photographer.

He acknowledged that he had made a mistake and was now moving on with his life, despite the cruel instances of bullying he had faced.

The second video being investigated, also taken several months ago, involves a young Maltese woman.

Rumours about the identity of a man who had uploaded the clips started late last year.

Times of Malta is now informed that the police have questioned a man in relation to the video.

In Malta, distributing, circulating or publishing pornographic material is prohibited by article 208 of the Criminal Code.

Under Maltese law, pornography is defined as material whose dominant characteristics are the exploitation of or undue emphasis on sex.
