The amount of waste treated in 2012 almost doubled over the previous year but did not reach the levels of 2006 and 2007, according to the National Statistics Office.

Last year 1.988 billion tonnes of waste was treated, an increase of 83.9 per cent over 2011.

This mainly resulted from inert mineral waste such as construction debris and excavation material, which more than doubled.

The amount of waste managed at the Għallis landfill went up by 7.2 per cent over 2011 and that sent to the Sant’Antnin recycling plant was up 10.6 per cent, with domestic waste and grey bag collection making up 94.4 per cent of the total.
