An Italian Navy rescue operation was under way last night after as many as nine migrants’ boats were spotted south of Lampedusa, outside Malta’s search and rescue region.

A Maltese armed forces plane had discoverd two of the vessels.

The number of migrants on board was unknown.

Another boat with 233 migrants on board was intercepted in the morning.

The migrants were taken to Syracuse.
