Dr Albert Ganado was recently awarded the degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) by the University of Malta in recognition of his significant contribution through his dedicated study of the history of cartography over various decades.

Dr Ganado has contributed to national and international literature on cartography and to the compilation of a collection of maps of Malta, which are now a valuable asset of Malta’s national heritage. He has also studied and issued publications on diverse aspects of Maltese history, including art, legislation, politics and philately.

The degree was conferred by University rector Prof. Juanito Camilleri, while the chancellor, Prof. David Attard, presented him the degree scroll. Dr John Betts, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, delivered the oration. The ceremony was held at the church of the University (Jesuits’ church), Valletta.

Dr Ganado founded various academic societies, was past president of the Malta Historical Society and is the founder and current president of the Malta Map Society. His contributions to the art and history of cartography were recognised by the International Map Collectors Society, which presented him with its Helen Wallis Award in 2011.

Dr Ganado thanked the University authorities for conferring upon him the prestigious honour, and thanked all those who helped mould his life, in particular his father, Judge Roberto Federico Ganado, from whom he inherited his love for Malta’s history.
