Video interviews of youths talking about their careers, talents, social life and fashion are being featured on The Zone at www.timesofmalta.com /thezone.

Tomorrow, several new interviews will be uploaded with youths involved in various professions in the following sectors that the public’s well-being depends on to a large extent.

Waste: We rarely, if ever, think of what happens when we dispose of our garbage, whether it is a humble banana peel or something much larger, like a refrigerator, except perhaps when we are stuck in a car behind a garbage truck and the smell that follows it.

After we dump our little (and sometimes not so little) black bag in front of our doors and carry on with our routines and our work, it becomes someone else’s responsibility.

Dealing with garbage for a living is a job that carries a stigma. Many people look after our rubbish – collect, sort and recycle it in an environmentally safe way.

Water: How do we get water in our kitchen and bathroom taps? How safe is it, how clean is it, and who is responsible to ensure this? And what happens to our waste water?

The Zone meets some of the engineers, operations officers and lab workers who look after one water supply – one of the most essential necessities for our well-being.

Air traffic control: Air traffic controllers ensure that airplanes take off and land safely. The Zone stepped into the air traffic control tower at Malta International Airport to meet air traffic controllers and other backstage professionals whose work is unique, highly demanding and very responsible.

Meet them all on The Zone this week.

Be heard and share your own experiences with others. Tell them about your career choice, what it takes to get where you are, the ups and downs you experience, and offer advice to those who are still uncertain about what they want to do in the future. To be interviewed for The Zone, send an e-mail with a brief description of your career, talent, or a social issue you would like to discuss. Alternatively, you can send your own video. Send a low-resolution version of your file to thezone@timesofmalta.com.
