Pirelli insists the safety of the tyres that will be used in the 2014 Formula One World Championship is not in question despite Nico Rosberg’s tyre blow-out during testing in Bahrain on Thursday.
Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes and Toro Rosso have all taken part in a three-day test, which started on Tuesday at the Sakhir circuit, as the Italian company looks to adjust to the requirements next season’s extensive rule changes will demand of the rubber.
Pirelli had found itself at the centre of unwanted attention when a spate of tyre failures blighted the British GP at Silverstone in June, which led to a change in tyre construction for the second half of the 2013 season.
Rosberg’s Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton was among the drivers to be affected on that day, and the German revealed on Twitter that he himself had suffered a frightening 200mph blow-out on Thursday.
“The tyre tests in Bahrain regarded a number of prototypes, which were completely innovative in terms of structure and compounds, with the aim of developing the most suitable solutions for the next season,” Pirelli said.
“Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes was fitted with one of these prototypes, a tyre which had only been tested in the laboratory and which will not be proposed again.
“Thus, the safety of the tyres which will be supplied for the next Championship is not in question.”
