On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Malta University engineering degree courses (1963–2013), John Myers, pictured, was awarded a Doctorate in Engineering (honoris causa) by the University for his pioneering work in helping to set up the BScEng course in Malta.
Mr Myers arrived in Malta in 1964 and stayed until 1970, when he held the post of acting head of the Electrical Engineering Department. During this time, he obtained a Master’s degree through research from the University of Malta.
He was instrumental in the procurement and equipping of the first electrical engineering laboratory facilities. Moreover, through his intervention with Prof. M. G. Say of the Institution of Electrical Engineers of London, Mr Myers obtained full accreditation of the BScEng and DipEng course, which meant that the degree of the first graduates in 1966 was of sufficiently high standard to be automatically accepted for graduate membership of this institution.
This also meant that the Malta engineering degree was equivalent to that of any British university.
