It’s the season to be jolly, so ho ho ho and happy holidays to all. But hold on—should your pre-booked holidays always be enjoyed?

Now that is a question which I would like to answer with a resounding YES so that you will all think what a nice chap I am at Christmas. But no I won’t as, I’m afraid, if you have special responsibilities you can’t go on holiday if the timing is terribly wrong.

If I go on holiday and don’t blog, who cares? Some, in fact, would say hurray and good riddance and the rest of the rubbish. But if I headed a hospital which was facing terrible problems then I should cancel my holiday, even if I was terribly tired and in need of a break.

Our hospital—our state-of-the-art hospital—has serious problems of administration and, we have been warned, more trouble is brewing with more and more patients having to wait and then wait a bit longer.

But the poor suffering Mater Dei CEO needed a break and so off he went on his booked holiday—at such a crucial time. Imagine having a CEO, a super-duper minister with an office at hospital to make sure all works well and an ex-EU commissioner to help man the fort, and all we have is more, not less, disorganisation and more disarray.

Some of us were duped into thinking all would be fine once the bad old days of that vile PN were over—we all thought, or some of us did, that the sun would be warmer and the hospital would function like clockwork. The bad, which could only get better, just got terrible.

So anyway whether the CEO is here, there or nowhere maybe not much will change. Maybe after all he should go and enjoy a longer break—and take the minister and all the rest with him to bask away in the sun.
