A giant canvas based on an image chosen and created by the Maltese public is currently being exhibited in Valletta.

The canvas depicts the image from Europeana.eu the Maltese voted for to represent our heritage – an ancient map of Malta showing the place where St Paul was shipwrecked.

Europeana is Europe’s digital museum, library, gallery and archive, and together with its Maltese partner, AcrossLimits, recently launched a nationwide campaign to introduce Malta to the myriad cultural treasures that can be found on Europeana.eu, including books and manuscripts, photos and paintings, television and film, sculpture and crafts, diaries and maps.

The canvas is made of a mosaic of over 400 individual pieces, each containing personal messages and drawings made by the Maltese.

Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Stefan Buontempo was the first to contribute to the image, when he inaugurated the creation of the 5m x 3m canvas at Europeana’s stand during the National Book Festival.

Other well-known contributors included Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, writer Trevor Zahra and pop tenor Ludwig Galea.

The winning image was nominated by Josephine Spiteri, and voted for by the public on the Malta in Europe – Europeana Facebook page.

Europeana.eu offers over 29 million cultural entries from 2,300 leading galleries, libraries, archives and museums. The website offers a wealth of books and manuscripts, photos and paintings, television and film, sculpture and crafts, diaries and maps, and sheet music and recordings – all waiting to be discovered.

The canvas is on show at St James Cavalier, Valletta, until December 23.
