Fr Albert Sammut OFM Conv., passed away on November 27 at the age of 80. He was born at Birkirkara on February 22, 1933 and was ordained priest in Rome on March 16, 1957.

Fr Albert, a good friend of mine, was a theologian, a writer, an author and a great poet. He published many books, both poetry and prose, both religious and profane.

He also did missionary work in both India and in the Philippines and, lately, served as Confessor (Penitentiary) for many years at the Vatican.

But, above all, he was a great poet and published nine volumes of poetry under various pseudonyms, such as AB-el Kieni, Farid il-Għamra and Raħbi l-Għarib.

I used to spend a lot of time chatting with him, sharing our points of view about nature, love, life and other subjects of a poetic nature.

And, yet, his passing away was quite unnoticed by media news! Shame or pity?
