Mater Immaculata is the subject of a sacred art exhibition currently being held in the main hall of the Sacred Heart Seminary, Victoria.

There are 32 exhibits consisting of paintings of various sizes and other objects d’art depicting the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose feast is being celebrated today.

The items were loaned from various Gozitan churches and chapels as well as from private collections. The paintings date from the late 17th-century to recent times, and include works by local artists Stefano Erardi, Michele Busuttil, Pietru-Pawl Caruana, Ignazio Cortis, Giuseppe Calì, Rafel Bonnici-Calì and Emvin Cremona, as well as others of foreign provenance.

On show is also a beautiful statue of the Immaculate Conception made from alabaster, formerly in the collection of Karolina Cauchi, the foundress of the Domenican Sisters of Malta.

The exhibition is open today from 10am to noon and from 4 to 8pm.

A catalogue is available at the door against a small donation.
