Young air-rifle marksman Gianluca Azzopardi Spiteri convincingly won the second selection shoot of this year’s UK Eley-NSRA competition, held in Bidnija last weekend.

Azzopardi Spiteri prevailed over six other shooters in the mixed event.

His best score of 554 points lifted him to the top of the leader-board, just two points ahead of another promising talent, Isaac Zammit. Alison Vella, last year’s Eley-NSRA gold medallist, was third with 551 points.

The cold and humid conditions had an adverse effect on the per-formances of most of the shooters at the MSSF range.

However, this victory augurs well for Azzopardi Spiteri in his preparation for the Youth Olympic Games European selection shoot in Moscow next February.

The air-pistol event was won by Eleanor Bezzina.

She compiled a score of 363/400 points, enough for her to see off competition from Stephen Vassallo who accumulated 358 points.

Ray Cacciatolo was third on 351.

Both competitions were judged by Lawrence Darmanin. He was assisted by Lilian Calleja.
