The economy is not creating enough jobs to keep up with demand, PN deputy leader Mario de Marco and finance spokesman Tonio Fenech said this evening.

Referring to NSO figures for July, they said that while the number of gainfully occupied had risen, the unemployed had increased by 634.

"The number of people seeking jobs is growing faster than the number of new jobs."

Concern was compounded by the fact that that a number of companies in the manufacturing sector were planning to reduce their workforce.

Yet the government had revealed no plans to remedy the situation.

The spokesmen said the PN was urging the government to roll out a plan to intervene for companies which ran into difficulties and a longer-term plan for job creation.

The NSO said earlier today that in July, the number of full-time jobs increased by 2.6 per cent over the previous year, to 157,615. The unemployed increased by 634.
