Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain was pleased to have finally ended his goalscoring drought.

Higuain had failed to find the back of the net in his previous five games but struck a brace in Napoli’s 4-2 triumph at Lazio on Monday night to silence his critics.

“I am delighted to have helped the team win,” the summer signing from Real Madrid told reporters yesterday.

“It was a very important result.

“It had been a while since I scored but it hasn’t been a big weight on me because I’ve had the trust of everyone and I’ve always been calm.”

Monday’s win in Rome was Napoli’s 10th of the campaign and allowed Rafael Benitez’s side to strengthen their hold on third place in Serie A, moving them four points clear of Inter below them.

They are also now three points behind Roma in second spot, with leaders Juventus a further three points clear.

“There is still a long way to go and we are doing well,” Higuain said.

“We still have to grow as a team but we have an interesting project, with so many talented players and a good coach.”

Meanwhile, striker Goran Pandev said he would like to end his career at Napoli after revealing his desire to extend his stay at the club beyond 2015.

The 30-year-old Macedonia international is contracted for a further season with the Serie A side and confirmed he would be happy to sign a new deal if one was offered.

“I don’t know anything about the transfer market,” Pandev said.

“I have one and a half years left on my contract and I am happy here. I wouldn’t want to change team but if I had to, I would consider going abroad.

“However, I would like for Napoli to be my last team.”

Pandev moved to the Naples outfit from Inter in 2011.

The forward, who has made 12 league appearances for Napoli this season, scored his fourth league goal in the 4-2 triumph at former club Lazio on Monday.

Napoli host Udinese on Sunday.
