Not only are these parties exciting and playful, but also simple to plan and inexpensive for both hosts and guests. Conversation will flow easily as friends laugh and celebrate together wearing something that’s been hid away, never to be worn. This theme is a money and time saver for guests who often purchase new clothing for the parties and events they attend. Below are some really great tips for a successful ugly sweater Christmas party filled with laughter and merriment.

The Invitations:

Set the tone of your party by sending out invitations to your potential guests. The crazier the invitations, the better! Show off a collection of ugly sweaters to inspire your guests with gaudy ideas. Encourage your guests to wear the ugliest sweater possible and suggest accessorising their sweaters with crazy hats, gloves, glasses and more.

Find Your Ugly Sweater:

You are the one hosting the party so you need to make sure your sweater is the epitome of ugly. Check out local thrift shops or other used clothing stores to browse the large selection of hideous sweaters that others might have politely slipped into the donation box directly after Christmas. If you’re out of luck, consider browsing through grandma’s closet.

If your sweater is not as ugly as you would like, make it even uglier! Amp up the ugly by visiting a nearby craft store to stock up on fabric paints, pompon balls, ribbons, sequins, and other materials that can easily be hot glued onto your sweater to create a supremely hideous look.

Deck the Halls:

No Christmas party is complete without an array of Christmas decorations. Yet keep in mind, this is an ugly Christmas sweater party so you will want to deck your halls with some of the tackiest and quirkiest decorations possible - the more distracting and gaudy the better!

Cover your house in multi-coloured flashing lights as well as sparkling garland. Another great decor idea involves making paper snowflakes and hanging them from the ceiling throughout your home. To really decorate your home for an ugly sweater party, simple take some ugly Christmas themed wrapping paper and wrap up various items around your home such as the door, large pictures, and even the furniture!

Use inspiration from classic holiday movies to decorate your party as well. Try finding a remake of the hilarious “leg lamp” from the holiday classic “A Christmas Story” to put on display during your party. This is sure to bring more laughs and conversation from your guests.

Games and Activities:

Allow your guests to have some fun with some exciting games and activities. No ugly sweater party is complete without a contest. Set up a voting station so all of your guests can vote on the ugly sweaters in attendance using themed categories such as:

- All Around Ugliest

- Most Original

- Best Couple’s Sweaters

- Most Likely To Be Arrested When Seen In Public

- Most Scary

- Most Joyful and Festive

In addition to a contest, bring out the karaoke machine so your guests can sing as loud as their sweaters to some of the greatest Christmas tunes. Lay out some Christmas themed props such as Santa and elf hats, white beards, and elf ears so everyone can take some hilarious pictures.

Food and Drink:

Last but not least, incorporate some holiday themed food into your party such as crazy decorated sugar cookies and gingerbread men, brightly coloured drinks, and of course, the dreaded holiday fruit cake.

Oh. And last but not least…. Have fun.
