Gaia Cauchi and her team are to be nominated for Gieh ir-Republika, the country's highest honour, the prime minister announced this evening.

The award will be given to them following their triumph at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

The young singer and her team were warmly welcomed by Dr Muscat when they called at the Prime Minister's Office in parliament.

Gaia, 11, was surprised by the announcement and admitted she initially did not know what it meant.

She will be the youngest person to receive the honour.

Dr Muscat said the singer had made Malta proud and the Cabinet had unanimously decided that she should be given the honour. It will be conferred on Republic Day, December 13 and Gaia will be enrolled in the National Order of Merit.

Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia was present for the meeting.
