With only a few weeks till the Christmas festivities reach a climax, it’s time to start seriously planning our Christmas events.

Whether we favour casual dinners with family and friends or more elegant holiday get-togethers, the Christmas table needs a definite seasonal signature.

There are plenty of things to consider when it comes to setting up the table, from centrepieces to place cards, candle decorations and more. Making that extra effort is always worth the time spent, as the table will act as a beautiful centrepiece and set the mood for your guests, ultimately making your party or dinner even more memorable.

The contemporary look

Red and green are the most mainstream and commercial colours that tend to dominate Christmas decor. However, you do not have to tie yourself to these two hues alone. Nor should you simply splash a medley of items. Decide on a specific theme and do it right.

Two trends have been noticeably present in so far as decorating the table goes, with many designers opting for either the elegantly modern and sophisticated look or the tastefully traditional and warming.

Natural elements like branches offer a creative touch.Natural elements like branches offer a creative touch.

For a sophisticated look with classic shades, use rich burgundies and golds, dark cranberries and deep greens. You can use just one of these colours or even combine more.

Taking it a step further, for a wow factor use black, white and an accent colour such as silver, gold or red; add some DIY pieces, such as pine cones sprayed in a glossy white, and you’re sure to impress.

To spice up your table and truly create a sophisticated scene, add a new tablecloth in rich, elegant colours. Locally, you can now also find mesh polyester throws to place over the table cloth in order to add further depth and add texture. Use solid colours for the placemats, and perhaps even a fun pattern for the napkins to add interest.

Chic hues make a great accent for your holiday table. A simple but noticeable change that will freshen up your furniture without having to buy any new major item is a wrap on the back of your chairs. Opt for lovely fabric tied in a delicate way.

Accessorise your table accordingly without going over the top; opt for elegant candle holders, or a plain but striking centrepiece made up of a mirrored base and tea lights, for example.

The traditional approach

Traditional Christmas table setups spark fond childhood memories, and ultimately offer a backdrop to creating new ones with family and friends. Findinspiration with these tips for getting tasteful traditional warmth in your home this holiday season.

Make sure the look incorporates vintage decorations that give a homemade feel for traditional quality.

Natural elements like branches, leaves, pine cones, dried fruit and chestnuts make simple, charming decorations in a traditional Christmas spirit. It is easy to create unique, personal touches with these freely available objects.

Red and green shades help you create focus on the rich colours of the season when preparing your table settings.

For a touch of glamour, you can also include some shine, add gold or silver accessories or candles, and even some subtle touches in the trimmings.

In a brightly-lit room, dark tablecloths create a nice contrast.

To brighten the table, choose a crisp, white cloth with a red or green runner down the centre.

An arrangement of trimmed poinsettia would make a fitting centerpiece, as would a basket with brightly polished, red apples, arranged with cinnamon sticks and pine cones.

The rich colours on the table require simple plates. White or cream tableware complements the theme, colours and centerpiece without being overpowering.
