Form 2 students of St Ignatius College’s Girls’ Secondary School recently walked to the nearby Qormi industrial estate to meet workers and owners of companies operating there in an effort to raise awareness about what could be done to reduce waste and inform them about telephone numbers they may call to recycle bulky and chemical waste.

The idea to organise the walk comes from the school’s Ekoskola committee as part of the activities for the European Week of Waste Reduction. In the run-up to the event, the committee sent a letter to Qormi mayor Rosianne Cutajar to inform her about this initiative and prepared information leaflets to be distributed during the activity. It also addressed all Form 2 classes during a morning assembly to inform them about the awareness campaign and asked them to prepare posters and material to be used in the campaign.

The students were greeted well by everybody they met on the walk, and the initiative was appreciated.

The campaign was the first of a series of initiatives being planned to promote a cleaner environment, including an exhibition at the school and a clean-up day.
