Greenpak Coop Society recently launched the third edition of its Irriċkla għall-Istrina initiative, which aims to collect funds for the upcoming L-Istrina 2013 fundraising campaign for local charities by gathering and recycling plastic bottle caps. The scheme was launched at Sliema primary school.

This edition of the scheme has been extended to 88 primary schools, thereby enabling more households to actively contribute to this charitable cause. Pupils are being encouraged to collect and deposit plastic bottle caps in Greenpak’s recycling bags at their respective schools.

During the launch of the campaign, Greenpak’s educators, along with Greenpak’s mascot, Green Gary, explained the scope and benefits of the initiative.

“By merging two socially beneficial activities, Irriċkla għall-Istrina aims to instil among the young generation the importance of contributing to a charitable cause and helping to create a more caring and environment-friendly future,” said Greenpak senior manager Denise Brincat. “The more plastic bottle caps students collect, the bigger will be their school’s donation towards L-Istrina.”

The combined effort of the schools that took part in last year’s L-Istrina 2012 event culminated with student representatives presenting a cheque for €7,000 to President George Abela. A total of 2.8 million plastic caps had been collected and recycled by 56 schools and other organisations.

As one of Malta’s major charity events, L-Istrina is organised by the Malta Community Chest Fund and involves the airing of a 12-hour TV marathon on December 26.
