People opting to scrap their car and replace it with an electric one would be able to get a government grant of up to €5,000, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said this morning.

Addressing a conference on electro-mobility, organised by Transport Malta, Mr Mizzi said that people would benefit on a first come first served bases.

During the conference, he also announced that a national electro-mobility Action plan had been launched for public consultation as well as a national electro-mobility platform.

The minister said that the government was to start migrating to a cleaner car fleet as from next year.

He said that a technical committee was to be set up to draw up a report for Cabinet with the aim of encouraging more importers to import electric cars.
